Galactic Current Sheet
Galactic Current Sheet - In this section, we revisit the basic dynamics of current sheets by highlighting, in particular, the formation of their fine structure and their stability properties. Web it’s the current sheet — a sprawling surface where the polarity of the sun’s magnetic field changes from plus (north) to minus (south). A small electrical current flows within the sheet, about 10−10 a/m². A wavy, crinkly sheet acts as a better shield against these energetic particles from deep space. Web as introduced above, frs, blobs/plasmoids/bubbles, css and mis are ubiquitous features in the dynamics of astrophysical plasmas. With lengths and breadths of hundreds of millions of light years but thicknesses of only ~20 million light years, galactic sheets (also known as great walls) are some of the largest known structures in the universe. The thickness of the current sheet is about 10,000 km near the orbit of the earth. As the field reversal approaches, data from wilcox show that the sun’s two hemispheres are out of synch. Web the current sheet acts as a barrier to cosmic rays, deflecting them as they attempt to penetrate the inner solar system.
